Systems Administrator

Role Description

We are looking for an experienced System Administrator for our growing company that currently has 100 staff with the advanced IT needs of a software development business. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and manage effectively a complex and demanding IT infrastructure. The infrastructure is a mixture of onsite Windows and Linux based servers, with some Solaris, AIX and mainframe systems and alternative Linux hardware architectures. Onsite infrastructure makes use of public cloud infrastructure with physical and virtual network appliances. The role will include automation and systems programming including SOA, virtualisation and containerisation patterns and involvement with dev-ops. The successful candidate will report to the IT Manager.

Main duties involve:

  • Provide first- and second-level technical support for IT tickets
  • Implement automated resolution for as many types of incidents as possible
  • Monitor overall system performance and ensure effective system operation 24x7
  • Create and maintain documentation and ensure it is tested and used
  • Work to ITIL best practices
  • Work with others to ensure compliance with process and policies
  • Implement agreed standards, policies and procedures for continuous service improvements 
  • Identify root causes to incidents and resolve them putting in place permanent remediation
  • Automate and improve infrastructure
  • Work with business users and application owners to maintain and improve systems
  • Work with dev-ops and software engineering team to improve systems and processes
  • Actively work with steering group to specify and prioritise strategic improvements
  • Proactively identify problems and potential problems and ensure they are fixed
  • Required to be on call out of hours
  • Occasional travel to other office sites including Guildford

The ideal candidate would have experience of system administration of:

  • OS admin: Linux, Windows, AIX, Solaris, MacOS, z/OS
  • Hardware provisioning: x86, SPARC, POWER, ARM, s390/System z
  • Provisioning systems: Ansible, Puppet, Foreman 
  • Virtualisation: Ovirt, Docker, Hyper-V, VMWare, Kubernetes, SANs
  • Public cloud: Azure, AWS, Google
  • Backup: Azure backup, Bacula
  • Systems management: Zabbix, Software Center, MS Systems Management
  • Development tools: Git, Jenkins, Gerrit, Artifactory
  • Databases: Mysql, PostGres, SQL Server, DB2, Oracle 
  • Networking: TCP/IP, NAT, VPN, VLAN, Pfsense, Firewall, DOS, DHCP, DNS, proxying
  • Domain and user administration: Active Directory, AzureAD, LDAP, SMB, Fileshares
  • Office365: Exchange, SharePoint, SfB
  • Package Management: Yum, homebrew, YaST
  • System Monitoring and Capacity planning
  • Documenting systems and SOPs for Incident Management
  • End user desktop and application support
  • Scripting and programing: Shell, Powershell, Javascript, C/C++, Ruby, Python, PERL
  • Business systems: Quickbooks, Salesforce, Jira, Zendesk
